He has the determination to break the record this time. Despite his past attempts, he has never given up.

In four days, Dan McGehee will enter the LA Velodrome for his third attempt at breaking the 100-mile track World Record. McGehee’s last attempt came up 9 second short. This time around, with sponsorship from Doctor Finder’s McGehee has been able to upgrade his gear and his training. “We know he’s going to succeed,” says Clint Ethington of Doctor Finders. “He has the determination to break the record this time. Despite his past attempts, he has never given up.”
McGehee has been sleeping in an oxygen tent to help improve his performance. Oxygen tents are often associated with mountaineers, however the idea of sleep high, train low is reaching across athletic boundaries. Oxygen tents improve athletic performance by 1-3%. Sleeping at altitude helps the body manage oxygen more efficiently.
Clothing is manufactured by Denver based Pactimo Apparel using material from the Swiss company Eschler, who has created the most aerodynamic fabrics in the world. From helmet to shoes, every item being used for this attempt has been designed to increase speed. Even the bike has been stripped down to the most essential elements so as not to add extra weight.
The Ultra Marathon Cycling Association is the sanctioning body for the race and a stringent timing system is in place that records the speed of each lap and the overall speed to the thousandth of a second for the attempt. McGehee currently holds the UMCA 100-road record of 3:56:03.
Fueled by Gu Energy gels and bananas, Clif products and Fluid recovery drinks, McGehee has been on a regimented training schedule including Bikram Yoga in Tempe, AZ which has allowed McGehee to position his body to hold one position for hours on end. “Dan is the epitome of the balanced lifestyle we recommend for health and success,” says Ethington. “He doesn’t allow his optometry practice to suffer because he’s pursuing other goals, and at the end of the day, his family is the most important element in his life.”
