North American Center for Continuing Medical Education, LLC (NACCME) - the CE-sponsor for the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) Spring and Fall meetings and SAWC co-host HMP Communications, LLC, today announced that through an official state proclamation, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, designated April 2012 as “Chronic Wound Care Month,” which coincides with the 25th annual SAWC Spring and Wound Healing Society (WHS) Meeting to be held, April 19 -22, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Affecting almost 6 million Americans annually, chronic wounds are debilitating, painful and can result in amputations and other serious complications*.    The annual incidence of chronic wounds is expected to increase with the growing elderly, diabetic and obese populations. Evidence-based practice can greatly improve wound healing and may reduce the overall clinical burden of wounds**.    To establish best practices and improve healing outcomes in patients with wounds, the SAWC was launched 25 years ago to bridge practice gaps and explore scientific breakthroughs in the field.

Organizers of the SAWC and wound clinicians from the Archbold Center for Wound Management and Hyperbaric Medicine in Thomasville, GA, Greg Patterson, MD, FACS, CWS and Tere Sigler, PT, CWS, CLT-LANA successfully sought the support of the State of Georgia for the signing of a proclamation declaring April 2012, “Chronic Wound Care Month.”

The SAWC meeting is the premier educational wound care program and the largest annual gathering of interdisciplinary wound care specialists in the United States. To more effectively provide education to the growing group of clinicians involved in wound care, SAWC hosts Spring and Fall events which are also the official meetings of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC), the preeminent, multidisciplinary organization for advanced wound care. More than 2,000 physicians, podiatrists, nurses, therapists, and researchers are expected to attend the 2012 SAWC Spring/WHS meeting.
