Company launches nine price indexes for wines most actively traded at global auctions.

Since our indexes are based on global auction results, they are inherently based on the richest possible set of transaction data on fine wine

Vinfolio announced today the launch of WinePrices.com Fine Wine Indexes, a comprehensive set of performance indicators for some of the most actively traded wines on the global wine auction market. The indexes, available free at http://www.wineprices.com/finewineindexes, currently track nine different portfolios of fine wines starting in 2005, with two universal and seven region-specific indexes. All index prices are calculated in US dollars and the indexes are updated with the most current auction pricing data on a monthly basis.

WinePrices.com Fine Wine Indexes provide wine collectors and investors the most representative and comprehensive transaction-driven pricing data available, and serve as resources in wine buying and selling decisions.

"Since our indexes are based on global auction results, they are inherently based on the richest possible set of transaction data on fine wine," said Stephen Bachmann, CEO, Vinfolio, Inc. "This fact alone makes the WinePrices.com Fine Wine Indexes the best measurement of market price changes."

Current auction results through the month of March 2009 show the fine wine market in virtually all categories has already begun to turn upwards after previous declines of almost 40% in some cases.

Index formulation policies:

  • Criteria - Individual wines are selected based on a combination of their month-to-month sales consistency as well as their absolute frequency of auction sales.
  • Number of wines in each index - The trading frequency of wines determines the total number in each index.
  • Initial trading history - Each wine must have sold at auction in 750ml format during the first quarter of 2005, ensuring an initial trading history of over four years.
  • Substitutions - Wines demonstrating low trading activity are candidates for removal and more frequently traded wines will replace them.

Auction price data is obtained from WinePrices.com, which has over 400,000 auction prices from the last eight years and tracks the sales of nine auction houses in fourteen locations worldwide.
