Anyone can write a press release for search engines - even a business that doesn't have a web site. Most people only think of targeting the media but there are now many audiences - including buyers. Press releases have gotten a bad name with the media. However, the traditional press release has found new life online.

An online press releases is now part of a content marketing and SEO strategy to bring traffic and visibility to a company. A successful press release has a strong story and is shared and linked to. It's picked up by the media or through social media and bloggers. Done right, a press release continues to bring new traffic to web sites.

Online a press release can be multimedia rich with video, images and links. Adding these features makes the news come alive. "Too many companies use a press release to brag and talk about themselves. If you lead with a strong story first, then people will care what you have to say," said Thaeler. There are ways to capture traffic rather than having to create it from nothing.
