Winning Writers Announces 4 Literary Contests for 2013, Over $16,000 in Prizes

Established in 2001, Winning Writers will celebrate its 12th year by awarding over $16,000 in four poetry and prose contests. These include contests for humor poems, sports fiction and essays, as well as open contests for poems and stories of all kinds.

Here are summaries of the contest guidelines:

Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest (no fee)
12th annual free contest seeks humor poems. Eleven cash prizes totaling $2,000 will be awarded. Top prize of $1,000. Submit one poem by April 1 deadline. No entry fee. Winning entries published online. Final judge: Jendi Reiter. The most recent winner was Judith Sanders for "Shoppin' Spree".

Tom Howard/John H. Reid Short Story Contest
21st year. Ten cash prizes totaling $5,550 will be awarded. Top prize $3,000. Seeks short stories, essays and other works of prose, up to 5,000 words. Winning entries published online. Both published and unpublished work accepted. Fee per entry is $16. Postmark deadline: April 30. Judges: John H. Reid, Dee C. Konrad. The most recent winner was Tony Myres for "Searching for Father—A Tale of Repentance, Redemption and Resurrection".

Sports Fiction & Essay Contest
Now in its second year. Twelve cash prizes totaling $3,000 will be awarded. Two top prizes of $1,000 each. Submit stories and essays on sports-related themes, up to 6,000 words each. Winning entries published online. Entry fee: $15. Postmark deadline: May 31. Final judge: Jendi Reiter. The most recent top winners were Starkey Flythe for "State Champ" and Scott Winkler for "The Kicker".

Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest
11th year. $5,500 in prizes will be awarded, including $2,000 for a poem in any style and $2,000 for a poem that rhymes or has a traditional style. Both published and unpublished work accepted. Winning entries published online. Entry fee is $8 for every 25 lines. Postmark deadline: September 30. Judges: John H. Reid, Dee C. Konrad. The most recent top winners were Carmine Dandrea for "A Wake in the House" and Myron Stokes for "For My Ancestors".
