As never before Britain needs the energy of small business owners and entrepreneurs to drive the country forward and undoubtedly wherever Asian communities are, small business growth is at its strongest.

XLN Telecom, the leading independent supplier of telecoms to small businesses, is sponsoring the Diwali festival in Birmingham, which this year moves to the National Indoor Arena. With some 15,000 estimated to attend the event on Sunday 31st October, the Diwali event has become a major event in Birmingham’s cultural calendar.
In a speech praising the UK community, Head of XLN Group marketing, James Wilson said
“As never before Britain needs the energy of small business owners and entrepreneurs to drive the country forward and undoubtedly wherever Asian communities are, small business growth is at its strongest. The Asian communities of Britain have a long, hard earned tradition of work, struggle, achievement and success and we are proud to be here tonight to celebrate that.
XLN Telecom started as a small business some 8 years ago with the intention of competing directly with BT and delivering better services at lower prices for small businesses. Today we have over 120,000 customers across the country, employ over 200 people in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Kolkata and Delhi and have doubled our sales from £26 to £54m in the last 3 years.
35% of our customers are independent retailers and more than half of those are Asian. But it is not just in retail we see the growth of Asian businesses – we see it in every sector where dynamic, well run businesses, not afraid of risk and hungry for success driven by focussed Asian entrepreneurs are starting up every day, challenging existing models and established thinking to do more, better and faster.
At XLN we enjoy the abilities of young people and the diversity of a contemporary, multi-cultural society – more than half our staff are 1st or 2nd generation migrants, including our Founder & Chief Executive, Christian Nellemann who was himself named as Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the second time earlier this week. Business conversations begun in English are on many occasions concluded in Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu or Farsi – which tells you a lot about the strength and vibrancy of the Asian business community and its importance to us both as an employer and a service provider.
So as you look forward to Diwali, look also to the future of a strong and wonderful culture that today is so much part of our everyday business life – and the future of this city and this country. Just as Diwali is the Festival of Lights, so the Asian community is a bright beacon of hope in our recovery and growth.”
