The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest holidays for car crashes, particularly wrecks caused by drunk driving. We urge everyone to act responsibly as they celebrate this summer.

Yakima Valley car accident lawyer Mariano Morales Jr. today urged central Washington motorists to drive safely as roads become crowded over the extended Fourth of July holiday.

“We hope drivers throughout our area will keep safety in mind over the course of their holiday travels,” said Morales, a Yakima personal injury lawyer who leads the Mariano Morales Law Firm.

“The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest holidays for car crashes, particularly wrecks caused by drunk driving,” Morales continued. “We urge everyone to act responsibly as they celebrate this summer.”

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says that July 4 is the second-deadliest day for drunk-driving deaths in the U.S. after New Year’s Day.

In its annual Fourth of July news release, AAA said that more than 42 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home between Tuesday, July 3, and the end of Sunday, July 8. That’s an increase of about 5 percent compared to 2011.

AAA said further that falling gas prices will spur 84 percent of Independence Day revelers to travel by car.

Gas prices have fallen to less than $3.50 a gallon nationwide on average, down from a peak in April of more than $3.90 a gallon.

Morales added that safe driving also means not speeding, not engaging in distracted driving, such as talking on cell phones or texting while driving, and not driving while sleepy or fatigued.

“It’s especially important that parents talk to their teenage drivers about safe driving as we head into the Fourth of July and the rest of the summer,” Morales said. “More teens are on the roads during summer because they are out of school and, consequently, more young drivers are involved in car accidents during the summer.”

Morales’ Yakima personal injury firm provides videos and other information on its website to advise accident victims about the steps they should take to protect their legal options and rights after a Washington car crash.

“Even a safe driver can be seriously injured in a car accident caused by another driver’s carelessness or recklessness,” Morales said.

Morales said anyone hurt in an auto accident should contact a lawyer with experience handling Washington personal injury cases.

“A person who has been in a serious car crash will have to deal with damage to their car, medical treatment for their injuries, loss of time at work and other costly issues,” Morales said. “An accident victims needs to focus on their recovery, while an attorney focuses on protecting their legal rights.”
