High school guidance counselors who advise students on college choices say George Fox University offers one of the best undergraduate educations in the state of Oregon.
Based on a national survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report, George Fox is tied for first among Oregon schools in the publication’s “Best Colleges: High School Counselor Rankings of National Universities” list. George Fox is also the top-ranked Christian college among those schools in the 110-member Council for Christian Colleges & Universities categorized by U.S. News as national universities.
George Fox ranked No. 122 overall out of the 263 national universities included in the survey, tying for the top spot in the state with the University of Oregon and Pacific University. Oregon State tied for No. 171 on the list.
U.S. News asked high school counselors which colleges and universities they felt offered the best education to their students, taking into account the insights they use to direct students to particular colleges in addition to their knowledge about these schools in general. The magazine also asked them to consider what they know about each college’s academic record, curriculum, faculty, programs and graduates.
The counselors rated the quality of a school’s undergraduate academic programs on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished). Those who didn’t know enough about a school to evaluate it fairly were asked to mark “don’t know.” Scores for each school were totaled and divided by the number of counselors who rated that school, and then they were ranked in descending order based on the average high school counselor reputation score. Schools receiving the same rank and average reputation score are tied.
The high school counselors surveyed were all from the 1,787 public high schools nationwide in 48 states and the District of Columbia that made the 2010 U.S. News & World Report “Best High Schools” rankings. The high school counselor survey was conducted in spring 2010. One survey to rate colleges in the “National Universities” ranking category was sent to one counselor at each of nearly 900 of these high schools nationwide, according to the U.S. News website.
The methodology for the rankings is available on the U.S. News & World Report website.
U.S. News also ranked George Fox in the first tier of its “National Universities” category. The national universities category consists of 262 institutions (164 public and 98 private) that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees.
George Fox was also one of the top Christian colleges in the national universities category, joining Azusa Pacific University and Biola University of California as the top three schools representing the CCCU.
George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as the top Christian college in the Pacific Northwest and among the highest Christian colleges in the country. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university. More than 3,300 students attend classes on the university’s campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 12 master’s and doctoral degrees.
