Meet Z-CoiL Shoes Inventor Al Gallegos in Kansas City

In the early 1980s, Alvaro Z. Gallegos ran an average of seven miles a day. He suffered all the typical runner injuries -- heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, knee trouble, hip pain, and back pain. Although he owned a shoe store at the time and had access to all types of running shoes, he was unable to find a shoe that eased his pain: Enter Z-CoiL shoes.

Realizing that the source of his pain was due to impact, Al reasoned that putting a "shock-absorber" in the heel of his shoe would reduce the force of impact. And, as an added benefit, the spring would provide a form of energy in return, allowing Al to run faster and farther.

Now at 78 years of age, Al is still running but only with great ease in his Z-CoiL shoes. What started off as a novelty has become a phenomenon as Z-CoiL shoes have been on the market for 14 years and is now a multi-million dollar business.
