New York, NY (PRWEB) March 13, 2013
The Zithromax lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are investigating Zithromax lawsuits on behalf of individuals who suffered life-threatening irregular heart rhythms that may have been caused by the antibiotic known as Zithromax, Z-Pak and ZMax. On March 12th, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new Drug Safety Communication warning that Zithromax can cause a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm. The FDA warning was prompted by an agency review of two studies that assessed the potential for Zithromax to cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart.*
“This antibiotic has been prescribed to millions of people over the years. The FDA warning is extremely concerning,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is offering free legal evaluations to victims of sudden cardiac death or heart arrhythmia resulting in hospitalization following treatment with Zithromax, Z-Pak or ZMax.
Zithromax Side Effects
According to the FDA, 40.3 million individuals in the U.S. received an outpatient prescription for the antibiotic Zithromax (azithromycin), which is also sold under the brand name ZMax, and known popularly as Z-Pak. Zithromax is used to treat a variety of infections, including acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, urethritis and cervicitis, and genital ulcer disease.
This marks the second time in less than a year that the FDA has issued a communication regarding dangerous irregular heart rhythms associated with Zithromax. In May 2012, the agency notified the public of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that found certain patients taking Zithromax and similar antibiotics faced an excess risk of cardiovascular death compared to those taking amoxicillin.**
According to the FDA’s latest Safety Communication, the “Warnings and Precautions” section of the Zithromax label is being updated to strengthen the information related to the risk of irregular heart rhythms. The agency also noted that certain risk factors increase the chances of irregular heart rhythms with Zithromax, including:
- QT interval prolongation
- Low blood levels of potassium or magnesium
- Slower than normal heart rate
- Use of certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias
Victims of Zithromax side effects may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
