ZocDoc.com, the most innovative tool for instantly booking dentist and doctor appointments online, is offering kids a way to save their teeth and go home with a bag of goodies - a Candy "Buyback" program with New York City dentists in their network. ZocDoc's goal is to collect a ton of candy, saving New York City kids from consuming more than 500,000 grams of sugar.

We're trying to establish a world candy buyback record

Between the cool costumes, the pumpkin-carving and the trick-or-treating, there are lots of reasons for kids to love Halloween. But with every sugar-filled bag comes an abundance of candy that most kids can't - or shouldn't - finish.

ZocDoc.com, New York's most innovative tool for instantly booking doctor and dentist appointments online, is offering kids a way to save their teeth and go home with a bag of goodies - a Candy "Buyback" program with participating dentists in their network.

ZocDoc has signed up 10 Manhattan dentist offices to participate, making it the largest candy buyback ever in New York City. Participating dentists will offer a cash reward of $1 for every pound of candy that young trick-or-treaters bring in. For a list of participating offices, visit http://www.ZocDoc.com.

"We're trying to establish a world candy buyback record," says ZocDoc COO and co-founder Oliver Kharraz, MD. "Our goal is to collect one ton of Halloween candy, which will spare New York City kids more than 500,000 grams of sugar."

Dr. Daniell Mishaan DDS of Midtown Dental Group, one of the participating dentists, believes the candy buyback is a great way to promote good oral hygiene while reducing sugar intake that typically skyrockets around Halloween. "I get so much satisfaction seeing my young patients excited about healthy teeth and it is extremely encouraging to join ZocDoc's campaign for healthy dental habits," says Dr. Mishaan.

"There is only so much restraint Moms and Dads can put on their children when they are having so much fun during Halloween," adds Dr. Mishaan. "But when kids haul in bags with more than 100 pieces of candy in them, we have to find ways to educate them, and their parents, about the health consequences of eating that much candy."

Dr. Mishaan's philosophy was reinforced in a recent study by KidsHealth, which interviewed 1,200 trick-or-treaters about their Halloween candy intake. According to the study, 60% said parents should monitor their children's candy-eating, although 50% said they have no limits whatsoever on them.
