Zocor patients should be sure to inform their doctor immediately if they experience any muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, urine that is dark or red-colored, or unexplained tiredness, as all of these are symptoms of a possible Zocor muscle injury,

The threat of Zocor side effects has prompted the U.K.’s drug regulator to advise doctors there to alter dosage of the medication in patients taking certain other drugs, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), taking Zocor in combination with amlodipine or diltiazem may increase the risk of side effects such as muscle pain or cramps, and serious Zocor muscle injury. Both medications are calcium channel blockers used to treat high blood pressure, and are often prescribed to people taking Zocor, according to the MHRA. The agency is now recommending that doctors restrict the maximum dose of Zocor when taken with amlodipine or diltiazem to 20 mg per day.

“This is just another reminder that Zocor does carry certain risks. Zocor patients should be sure to inform their doctor immediately if they experience any muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, urine that is dark or red-colored, or unexplained tiredness, as all of these are symptoms of a possible Zocor muscle injury,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The firm is currently offering free legal evaluations to victims of Zocor side effects, including muscle injuries.

Zocor Muscle Injuries
Zocor is a synthetic statin used to lower cholesterol. Prior to 2005, when it became available in generic form (simvastatin), Zocor was Merck’s best-selling drug, as well as the second best-selling cholesterol drug worldwide. However, the drug has been linked to serious side effects including:

  •     muscle injury
  •     myopathy
  •     rhadbomyolysis

In March 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisedthat the 80 mg dose of Zocor could be associated with muscle injuries. At the time, the agency also cautioned that the risk of Zocor muscle injuries increases for patients who take the drug in conjunction with other blood pressure medications.* On June 8, 2011, the FDA added new warnings to Zocor’s labeling, and advised physicians not to prescribe high doses of Zocor to new patients. According to the FDA, high-dose Zocor prescriptions should be limited to patients who have taken 80 mg doses of Zocor for more than a year and have not experienced side effects.**

Individuals who experienced Zocor side effects, including muscle injury, myopathy, or rhadbomyolysis may be able to collect compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
