The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) today commended President-elect Obama's choice of Dr. Jane Lubchenco to be the incoming Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"Dr. Lubchenco is a well-respected and distinguished scientist and a passionate advocate for marine conservation," said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. "AZA-accredited aquariums have worked closely with Dr. Lubchenco and have tremendous respect for her scientific achievements."

AZA member institutions play a critical role in the conservation of marine species in their natural habitats through the broad-based environmental education and conservation research activities.

"We salute Dr. Lubchenco and look forward to working with her in her new role," added Maddy. "NOAA and AZA-accredited aquariums will continue to work together to conserve our oceans and marine resources."
