$60 Million Investment Planned for Chula Vista’s Castle Park Neighborhood and Schools

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced today that South Bay Community Services (SBCS) in Chula Vista is one of seven winners of the 2012 Promise Neighborhoods implementation grant fund. SBCS has been awarded $4.9 million to fund the first year of a $27.8 million, 5-year grant to execute a community-led plan that will support academic excellence and college-bound aspirations for all children in Chula Vista’s Castle Park neighborhood. An additional 28 local government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses, including Manpower, United Way of San Diego County, and the Parker Foundation have signed-on to provide over $33 million in match funding, making a total investment of over $60 million. The program will also create approximately 100 new jobs in year one, and grow from there as it continues to flourish.

University Development: Chula Vista Takes Step Forward In Agreement With Developer for Future University Site

In a move to establish a master plan developer for a future university park and research center on Chula Vista’s southeast boundary, the Chula Vista City Council unanimously approved an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement (ENA) with HomeFed Corporation at its meeting on December 11. HomeFed has maintained a progressive working relationship with the city on its university plans since 2007. At approximately 375 acres, the project is expected to host a mix of residential, retail and light industrial assets that will support the university.

Free Graduation Coach Workshops Announced for Month of October in Chula Vista

The Graduation Coach campaign educates caring adults in Chula Vista about critical conversations that empower “Coaches” to mentor students and discuss positive actions that help students navigate through school with a goal of graduating on time and formulating a plan for life after high school. Adult volunteers in the community will be trained as Graduation Coaches in free 60 to 90-minute workshops located throughout Chula Vista. Workshops will equip adults with key topics, conversations and questions to ask students of all ages to support their educational progress. Coaches also will be provided with local resources and skills to help young people who may be struggling in school to ensure they stay on track. Coaching can begin at any grade level with themes designed to be relevant for grades K-6, 7-8 and 9-12.

San Diego Bay: Single Implosion Slated for South Bay Power Plant

Dynegy South Bay, LLC, has submitted a minor amendment to its Coastal Development Permit for the demolition of the South Bay Power Plant to the California Coastal Commission. The terms of the amended permit include one implosion rather than the previously approved two-phased implosion of the power plant's above-ground structures. The new implosion procedure will remove the visual blight of the above-ground structures in a single incident. Noise levels would be reduced, the need to re-route traffic in the immediate area would be lessened and the demolition schedule would be shortened by approximately two months.

Strong Support For Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan Voiced At California Coastal Commission Meeting

The City of Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego today announced that more than 100 supporters attended the California Coastal Commission meeting in Chula Vista to endorse the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan (CVBMP). Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox, accompanied by Councilmember Pamela Bensoussan, introduced the speakers who represented an alliance of environmentalists, businesses and residents. Supporters wearing blue shirts to show solidarity, stood up and waved upon Cox’s request during the general public comment period. In the meeting, Coastal Commission staff indicated that the CVBMP is planned to go before the Coastal Commission for consideration in August at its Santa Cruz meeting.

The California Coastal Commission unanimously approved a Coastal Development Permit for the demolition of the South Bay Power Plant, located at 990 Bay Boulevard in Chula Vista. The issuance of the Coastal Development Permit is a precursor to the City of Chula Vista issuing a demolition permit. "Over the past decade, there has been great work happening to support the vision of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan and the Commissioners' unanimous decision today helps us move closer to creating a world-class resort and residential destination on our portion of San Diego Bay," said Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox. In partnership with the United Way of San Diego County, the Chula Vista plan is now part of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading network, which will provide access to experts, policymakers, and foundations investing in early literacy. Many of the plans will also serve as applications for the All-America City awards, which will be announced by the National Civic League in July.
