Interscope Records, which distributes rapper 50 Cent, recently announced that, due to rampant internet bootlegging of his release, Get Rich Or Die Trying, a bonus DVD would accompany the first 500,000 CDs as incentive to purchase, rather than bootleg or download. He sold 872,000 units within the first week – breaking the record for highest debut by a new artist.

“With 50 Cent’s success, and an upcoming DVD from Jennifer Lopez, the music business is obviously looking at DVDs for future income stream, as well as a way to recover from their (direct and indirect) losses. At this time, DVDs provide one of the safest and most cost effective way to go,” Eric Kline concludes.
