From the humor of Mr. Faizon Love (Comedian MC) to the eloquent speech from none other than, Ms. Margaret J. Norris (former Board of Director, Omega Boys Club), the Take Wings Foundation Gala held at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco on August 21, 2004 was an outstanding event. From laughter to tears of joy, the hundreds of guest in attendance were amazed and delightfully surprised the entire evening. Terri J. Vaughn, who was born and raised in Bayview's Hunter's Point, is the Founder of the Take Wings Foundation, and she presented recognitions of success to our local heroes and sheroes as a way of saying Thank You for keeping the faith. Presented with Awards were Michael Morgan (Music Director, Oakland East Bay Symphony), Regina Louise, Author, "Somebody's Someone", and Yvette Gatson, Counselor, Contra Costa Unified School District. District Attorney, Kamala Harris, shared words of wisdom and encouragement for the girls who are challenged daily with invitations that will not help their 'soaring' but rather hinder their growth.
The Angels (as Terri refers to them) were the girls of Take Wings who are soaring to success as they climb to higher heights in education and beyond despite their surroundings with the help of this Foundation. The Angels were in great numbers at the event, and representing were only a portion of the girls who are a part of Take Wings. Safeway, Inc. presented one of the girls of Take Wings with a scholarship which was a huge highlight of the evening.
Among the sponsors who supported the event was UPN, whose staff turned out in large numbers. The UPN signature van was a great highlight to the event and received much added attention. UPN is proud of the efforts of Terri and showed it very well with their presence and support.
