Carrell says a discovery from Granny's attic, a bargain from a garage sale or a winning bid on eBay may yield a discarded heirloom that can become a new treasure for not much money.
Before refinishing furniture, Carrell says to remove old wax with a rag soaked in paint thinner. "You may discover a beautiful piece of furniture underneath," Carrell says. "If so, give the piece a coat of pure oil furniture polish and enjoy! If not, you had to remove the wax anyway before refinishing."
If refinishing is called for, a chemical stripper is usually the best way to go, Carrell says. There are liquid strippers and paste or gel strippers. If the piece has a lot of vertical surfaces, the liquid runs off too fast. Also the paste or gel types don't dry as quickly. Check out the different varieties at your favorite local home improvement center.
Carrell, a nationally known expert on home improvement and repair including wood and furniture refinishing, served for eight years as spokesman for The Home Depot. He advises do-it-yourself furniture refinishers to work outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
