St. Paul, MN (PRWEB) May 25, 2005
In a move to aggressively expand the smart business practice of secure data backup and archiving, Intradyn announced today it is slashing the prices of the desktop models of its popular RocketVault appliance for small businesses by 20% from the already-aggressive prices the products have sold for widely since 2003. The entry-level model is now $1195. The firm says the price cut is enabled by volume production and associated economies of scale.
When it introduced the RocketVault two years ago, Intradyn was the first company to offer backup and archiving for both on-site and off-site data protection in a single, self-contained unit. The device is a hard-disk-based hardware and software solution for backing up a business data. In addition to on-site storage, it can send the data securely off-site for disaster recovery purposes. The RocketVault uses the highest level of encryption available, for the utmost in data security. ItÂs a simple, plug-and-play network-server solution requiring little setup time and no IT expertise. It provides protection against system crashes or other disasters that can severely affect any business ability to continue operating, enabling lightning-fast restores of critical business data when required.
The RocketVault has met with broad acceptance since its introduction in 2003, and is sold by a rapidly expanding network of resellers  now numbering more than 115 organizations throughout the U.S. and in several other countries. It is available in 11 models, from 240-Gigabyte to 4.0-Terabyte capacities. The price cuts, effective immediately, apply to the four desktop models, called the RocketVault Mini 240 and Mini 500, available with and without RAID 1 redundant disk drives. These models have a local archive capacity of 240 and 500 Gigabytes, respectively  enough to enable millions of small businesses to back up their data daily, weekly, and monthly, or whatever their needs dictate. Each desktop weighs only 8.5 pounds and is about the size of a toaster.
ÂSmall businesses are extremely cost-sensitive, said Gary Doan, founder and CEO of Intradyn. ÂThe price cut weÂre announcing today means that real, secure, enterprise-class data protection is now affordable to many more thousands of smaller firms. ItÂs part of a broad IT trend in the small business sector  these firms are starting to adopt advanced technology that had previously been available only to large firms, until recent price disruptions. WeÂre seeing it happen in telephony with VOIP, in software and IT infrastructure with open-source, in hardware with PC and server commoditization, as well as with the seemingly never-ending price drops for disk drives. We feel itÂs only natural that significant savings should now come to data protection and disaster recovery, in the way of an all-in-one solution  and weÂre glad to be leading that charge. Affordability was a key driver for us in bringing the RocketVault to market in the first place in 2003.Â
Market Need
Data protection is one of the most pervasive problems facing small businesses today. Nearly a third of the small firms in the U.S.  meaning millions of businesses  have no off-site backup, and most are without readily accessible archives, according to IntradynÂs market research. Prior to the availability of the RocketVault disk-based backup and archiving appliance, the majority of small businesses that were backing up their data were doing so to magnetic tape. Yet, a widely cited study by The Yankee Group found that 50-60% of attempted restores from tape backups fail, which the firm attributed both to the general unreliability of tape, as well as to human error. Network-based hard-disk backup and restore is many times faster than tape and widely recognized as more reliable. It is also more secure, in that tapes can be lost or stolen when transported to off-site locations.
RocketVault Customers Rave
Pete Semington, the owner of Dunn & Semington, a Minneapolis-based printing company, used to spend a weekend a month going back and forth from home to office in order to back up data, graphics files, and other materials relating to his clients work. ÂIt was such a tedious process, he said. ÂI hated it  I was just sick of it. But you need to do it. If anything happens, you have to have a way to pull yourself out of it. Then he found the RocketVault appliance. The best part, he said, was that is was so simple, and every other solution he looked at involved tapes or other manual labor to complete the backup. With the RocketVault appliance, Semington receives an email each morning informing him that his data backed up the night before, and once a week his information is sent in encrypted form via the Internet to his home for safekeeping. Now, he said, he spends his weekends with his family. ÂIÂm not Mr. Technical Guy. The beauty of this thing is I donÂt have to be, Semington said. ÂAs simple as they make the RocketVault out to be, it was. ItÂs a miracle machine as far as IÂm concerned.Â
