SEBASTIAN. Fla. - Alan S. Ferguson's new novel, The Dummy (now available through AuthorHouse), tells a poignant story of a tormented kid who crawls from the darkness of bullying into an adulthood no one expects.
At 2 years old, Greg Runnerstrum is wrongly diagnosed as being mentally challenged. Throughout his childhood years, he is bullied incessantly. The tormentors take this label and use it to break Greg down at every opportunity. But despite the profound sense of worthlessness Greg has acquired, he graduates from high school, moves out on his own and secures a job at a gas station mini-mart. The owner, Maria, sees potential in Greg. A native of Argentina, she relates to him because she has also had to work for everything she has. She encourages him to go to night school, where he meets more friends. Even Ray, a bartender, has befriended Greg.
Greg's life has turned out better than many expected, including Greg himself. But when one of the people from the nightmares of his past returns, Greg is faced with a new challenge. Bobby Tyland, the son of a wealthy owner of a construction firm, teams up with a hardened criminal to punish "the dummy" one more time. Just as this former bully comes back into his life, Greg almost loses it. He is nearly killed in a gas station robbery.
Miraculously, he survives and is in the hospital. While he's recuperating, his life turns around in ways he never thought possible. Throughout his life Greg was on the bottom rung, but suddenly he realizes that he does have something to offer the world.
Readers will relate to aspects of this complex, warm primary character. Greg's triumphant story describes an underdog who finally achieves the impossible.
