Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 11, 2005
Lehigh Valley Hospital—Muhlenberg (LVH—Muhlenberg) in Bethlehem, Pa, is installing an automated drug management system designed to package, store and dispense medications in bar-coded, unit dose form to ensure the utmost in patient safety.
The PillPick® system, built by Swisslog, will automatically package, store and dispense solids, injectables, cups and syringes in bar-coded, unit dose bags. Once bulk medications are packaged in bar-coded, unit-dose form, they will be stored in a high-density pharmacy robot that can hold up to 22,100 unit doses.
Unit doses are then pulled from the robot into a unit that assembles patient-specific, 24-hour medication orders on a patented, flexible PickRing. Each PickRing can be arranged alphabetically or by order of administration and a large tag attached to each ring specifies the drug, administration time and other patient-specific information. LVH-Muhlenberg will transport PickRings to the patient floors via cart fill method. LVH-Muhlenberg currently distributes 4,000 doses each day.
“The Swisslog PillPick system truly enhances the safety and efficiency of our medication safety system,” states Bob Begliomini, Administrator of Pharmacy Services. “All of our patients will benefit from this leading edge technology, which incorporates PillPick into our existing Physician Order Entry System and Bedside Barcode Verification System.”
The PillPick system is part of a comprehensive effort by LVH—Muhlenberg to provide patients the most advanced technology for patient safety, comfort and convenience.
Under the terms of the agreement, Swisslog will provide training for pharmacy staff in the operation and basic maintenance of the system.
