CritterMap Software announces the first release of BackCountry Navigator, Pocket PC GPS Software for outdoor navigation and geocaching. With the aid of topographical maps and aerial photographs, this software provides guidance for offroad adventures in the United States. With the aid of an optional GPS receiver, it displays your position on a moving map.
BackCountry Navigator uses freely available maps that are downloaded directly from TerraServer USA web service. Users can pick a region of interest for which to download topo maps, aerial photos, or both. They can also import geographical points from USGS database, or define custom waypoints of their own.
A popular feature of the software is the ability to import geocaching data from GPX or LOC files. This allows enthusiasts of this GPS treasure hunting sport to see the position of caches on a map, or see formatted descriptions and clues.
BackCountry Navigator works with commonly available Pocket PC GPS Receivers, including serial, compact flash, and bluetooth GPS units. Attaching a GPS allows you to see your position on a moving map, plus see bearing and distance to waypoints.
BackCountry Navigator has benefitted from the helpful feedback and suggestions of beta users, and continues to collect feedback for present and future versions.
"This program makes GeoCaching more fun," writes one user. "I like the simplicity of changing the views and the ease of downloading," writes another.
BackCountry Navigator hopes to meet the needs of those who wish to explore the outdoors through its terrain mapping, geocaching, and navigation capabilities. To learn more about the software and download a trial for evaluation, visit http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/.
