Orange, CA (PRWEB) November 17, 2005
AREVA, via its joint subsidiary with Siemens, Framatome ANP, is utilizing ETAP for the design and analysis of the Electrical Distribution System (EDS) for the largest nuclear generation unit in Europe based on Evolutionary EPR.
The EPR, based on long proven pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology, originally designed by Framatome* and Siemens* in collaboration with the French and German Safety Authorities and Utilities, represents the results of intensive research and development based on the operating experience of nearly 100 nuclear power plants built around the world by AREVA.
The EPR as a 3rd generation-reactor is the state-of-the-art technology in terms of economy, safety and environment and the key development goals were to:
-
Further increase safety and at the same time,
- Further improve economic performance.
The nuclear version of the Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) power system analysis software is utilized to model Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) EDS and consequently to perform static and dynamic analyses such as voltage dip/motor starting and fault current calculations.
The analyses considered are (1) the EDS capability to supply adequate voltage to system loads under worst case demand loading condition, and (2) system component capability and ratings to withstand potential short-circuit conditions when the system are fed via normal and standby grids, main generator, emergency and station black-out diesel generators.
ETAP will also be utilized for further analyses, evaluation and investigation of OL3 EDS design basis.
*Early in 2001, Framatome and Siemens merged their nuclear businesses to form Framatome ANP, with AREVA holding 66% share in the new company and Siemens holding 34%.
