Personal ID wristbands’ durability and bar code capability resolve a number of patient identification challenges for leading U.S. healthcare facility

General Data, a leading provider of specialized labeling and identification solutions, today announced that Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) in Buffalo, N.Y. has implemented the company’s Personal ID™AC wristbands to strengthen patient identification for the 100-year-old healthcare provider. The patent-pending Personal ID wristbands provide patients with a comfortable and durable wristband that allows hospitals to use bar code technology to reduce errors and ensure patient safety. The Personal ID AC wristband features a unique adhesive closure developed by General Data, which makes the wristband quick and easy to apply for admissions staff and nurses.

The Personal ID wristbands are recognized for their durable construction that resists tearing, scratching, alcohol or blood. They are ideal for both short- and long-term patient stays and will not fade or discolor in showers, whirlpools or therapy baths. ECMC is currently deploying the wristbands in several areas of the hospital with to goal to eventually integrate the wristbands throughout the entire hospital.

“The decision to implement the wristbands into our hospital was really driven by our nursing staff, which took the time to truly evaluate the comfort and durability of various patient ID wristbands,” said Debbie Cancilla, chief information officer for Erie County Medical Center. “In the end, the last wristband remaining was the Personal ID bands from General Data, and they have proven their value as we have deployed them throughout the hospital. The AC wristband combines simple application with comfort and durability that make them the ideal wristband for our patients.”

“Our Personal ID AC wristband has been well received in the marketplace, and we are pleased to be working with Erie County Medical Center to help improve patient identification and strengthen the hospital’s patient safety efforts,” said Peter Wenzel, president of General Data. “Erie County has a reputation as one of the top hospitals in the nation for a variety of disciplines, and is committed to patient care and customer service. By implementing the Personal ID wristbands with bar code technology, Erie County once again demonstrates that commitment.”

Shari Dause, director of marketing for TimeMed Labeling Systems, General Data’s distribution partner that supports ECMC, added, “As one of the leading providers of labeling and identification solutions for the healthcare industry, we recognize the growing demand for quality and reliable patient identification solutions. The Personal ID wristbands with bar codes help hospitals, such as ECMC, strengthen patient identification and dramatically reduce the possibility of adverse drug events and other preventable medical errors.”

Personal ID wristbands are designed specifically for the healthcare environment, allowing hospitals to incorporate multiple identifiers to ensure positive patient identification, including bar code technology, high-resolution patient photos and text. The wristbands are printed using a simplified direct-thermal printing process and meet or exceed the patient identification guidelines for the American Hospital Association, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
