The ABC Treehouse Gallery, a project of the American Book Center in Amsterdam, is opening the “Us on the U.S.” exhibition this Thursday June 29th. The collective gathering of American artists expressing their views on the contemporary USA is heating up the contemporary art scene in a continent where the circle of friends of the US seems to be shrinking.
There may be tensions between the US and the European Union over Guantanamo Bay and climate change. But the exchange of culture and art is alive and well. Donna DuCarme, manager and show curator of the ABC Treehouse gallery, has worked closely for many months with a select group of American artists. The mission was simple: express your views of your own country. While the US on the latest Vienna summit adopted a subtler, softer tone in their state negotiations, it is likely that the work of this group of artists will make a few people “hot under the collar”. If the premise that there is truth in art holds fast, the show promises to be a refreshing honest assessment of the state of the union.
"People are asking questions about the US,” said David Davis, painter of Code Red, one of the controversial pieces included in the exhibit, “ and artists are usually vocal about things of their era, even when it means a complete departure from their usual style, like Manet with his Execution of Emperor Maximilian in Mexico or Chaplin when he decided to have his voice heard for the first time on film. It is also interesting to note that it is testament to the forward thinking of Amsterdam in general and the ABC gallery in particular that this show is opening here. I don’t know if I would feel comfortable showing this work in the U.S."
The “Us on the U.S.” collective exhibition will be held June 29th to July 30th at the ABC Treehouse Gallery, Voetboogstraat 11, Amsterdam (telephone 020 423.09.67). Opening hours of the Gallery: Thursday - Sunday: 1PM 6PM - also by appointment. The ABC Treehouse is a project of he American Book Center.
