Bolingbrook, IL (PRWEB) August 31, 2006
Florida East Coast Railway ("FEC"), the transportation subsidiary of Florida East Coast Industries, Inc. (NYSE: FLA) ("FECI"), and Wi-Tronix, LLC have completed deployment of Wi-Tronix’s wireless remote monitoring solutions on FEC’s entire locomotive fleet. FEC’s wireless monitoring system is comprised of two core Wi-Tronix products, Wi-Tracker and Wi-DownloadER. Both products utilize Wi-Tronix’s ruggedized onboard Wireless Processing Unit (Wi-PU).
Wi-Tracker is an enhanced locomotive tracking system utilizing differential GPS, commercial cellular technology and an ultra-sonic fuel level sensor. In addition to standard tracking data such as position and speed, FEC is able to view key locomotive operating parameters such as fuel level, throttle position, horsepower, brake pressure and signal aspect. Increasing the visibility of fleet operations enables improved efficiency and locomotive utilization.
Wi-DownloadER allows FEC to wirelessly download locomotive event recorders or “Black Boxes” both periodically and on demand. Data from the locomotive’s event recorder is used to monitor crew performance and investigate incidents. Inefficient operations that waste fuel and increase equipment wear can be identified using data delivered wirelessly by Wi-DownloadER. Additionally, event recorder information can be used to implement predictive maintenance programs that ultimately reduce locomotive operating costs. Wi-Tronix’s Universal Event Recorder Interface technology allows wireless download of event recorders manufactured by several companies including Bach-Simpson, Q-Tron, Pulse, Wabtec, Rockwell, Quantum, EMD and Oregon Technical Products.
“Wi-Tronix gives FEC the ability to integrate technologies that improve the operational efficiency and service reliability of our fleet. After two years of investigating options, we determined that the Wi-Tronix solution is the most economical and versatile while providing a platform for future development,” said Gary Griffiths, Vice President and Chief Mechanical Officer of FEC.
