Stay at the Renaissance Charleston Hotel while visiting historic Charleston for the next democratic presidential debate on July 23rd.

Historic Charleston, S.C. will be the setting for the next Democratic presidential debate on July 23rd. Plan a long weekend vacation and take in historic Charleston, visit nearby attractions, attend the debate and stay at the nearby Renaissance Charleston Hotel.

A fitting location for this event, Charleston has a history rich in political strife. The area is home to Fort Sumter, several batteries on Morris Island and the USS Yorktown.

The Democratic national debate will be held at The Citadel, the well-known state military college, which also has a rich history. In 1861 its cadets were stationed on Morris Island and fired the first shots of the Civil War on a U.S. steamer trying to resupply Fort Sumter.

"It is fitting that this presidential debate will take place on a campus with a strong tradition of military service," said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. "Generations of Citadel alumni have fought to preserve the free exchange of ideas that this debate represents."

The Democratic Party stated that the following presidential candidates are expected to attend: U.S. Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware, Hillary Clinton of New York, Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Barack Obama of Illinois; Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and former Sens. John Edwards of North Carolina and Mike Gravel of Alaska.

The Democratic national debate at The Citadel will be close to the downtown Historic District and the Renaissance Charleston Hotel. Located less than 2 ½ miles from The Citadel, this historic Charleston, S.C. hotel is a great place to stay while taking in political and historic activities during the extended weekend.
