AboutCurves.com is celebrating its sixth anniversary this week, and will debut its private-label line of plus size lingerie later this month. A growing internet company, AboutCurves.com provides a positive message to the plus size community, reminding retail customers that every woman should celebrate her curves. The company offers a wide selection of plus size lingerie, ranging from the ultra-comfortable to the very daring.
AboutCurves.com has tripled in size since its birth as a home-based business. In 2001, entrepreneur Robin Bryan Culver applied her knowledge as an experienced business owner to the new start-up. "I knew that customer service was the most important part of a retail business," she says. Her other company, Walter H. Bryan Plumbing, Inc., was a family-owned business that she bought from her parents in the seventies and continues to own. "Customers have a lot of choices when it comes to choosing a company," she continues, "so I wanted to make our plus size customers feel special." As a result, AboutCurves.com takes special care to gift wrap each piece of lingerie in tissue paper, so that when customers receive their package, they feel like they are unwrapping presents.
Continuing the family tradition, AboutCurves.com is a business that Robin owns with her daughter, KC Culver. In addition to being a partner, KC teaches English at the university level, and used her novice experience writing html to start the business. "Our first few years," KC reflects, "we did everything through trial and error. We used ourselves as the first two models, taking pictures, then cropping our heads out, so that none of my students would find me on the internet wearing lingerie." She credits the success of the business to Robin's confidence in their abilities: "Sometimes we have mother-daughter fights. But without my mom's dedication and belief that we could do something big, we would never have made it past the first two years."
AboutCurves.com currently offers the largest selection of any website specializing in plus size lingerie. They pride themselves on offering a wide variety of manufacturers and on using plus size women as their models. "No one wants to see a style on a skinny model and wonder how it will look on their larger frame," KC explains. "That's why we find real women to be our models. Since my mom and I stopped being in front of the camera, we've used bankers, homemakers, students, and corporate officers to model our pieces."
AboutCurves.com will debut two items later this month as an introduction to their private label line, and additional items will follow.
About The Company:
About Curves was started in 2001 by a mother-daughter team who were frustrated by the lack of options available to women who do not fit the "model mold." Their mission is to provide women with the ability to feel sexy and to encourage women of all shapes and sizes to celebrate their curves.
Every product offered by About Curves is personally approved by a team of discriminating shoppers, and then modeled by plus size women in About Curves' very own photo shoots. The owners pride themselves on their insistence that women should not be made to squeeze their bodies into outfits that are uncomfortable, disrespectful, or poorly made.
The webstore now offers over 300 different products. The line includes traditional lingerie, including babydolls, bustiers, gowns, chemises, camisole sets, and teddys, as well as specializing in robe sets and bridal lingerie. The new expanded line also includes costumes, body products, feather products, and shoes.
