Through Integration With HP Quick Test Pro and LoadRunner, Development and QA Teams Now Include Network Dimensions That Affect Application Performance During Functional Testing Process

Shunra, the world's leading provider of network emulation solutions, today announced that it has expanded its VE Desktop Professional and Professional Services offerings to allow Development and QA groups to integrate their existing testing solutions with Shunra's leading network performance solution. Delivered through both VE Desktop Professional technology and Professional Services expertise, customers can now become more proactive and capture network-related defects much earlier in the software development lifecycle. Users can now easily include the network layer within existing unit and user acceptance testing processes, enabling applications to perform as expected once deployed over the Wide Area Network (WAN).

The end-to-end application performance best practices delivered through Shunra technology and on-site expertise provide discovery, analysis and reporting of an application's affect on the network. The integration with 3rd party Business Technology Optimization (BTO) solutions such as HP's Quick Test Pro and LoadRunner further enhances Shunra's overall capabilities. Throughout the Development, QA, Performance Testing, and Production phases of the application development lifecycle Shunra solutions will integrate with existing processes and testing tools to provide accurate performance application metrics prior to deployment.

"To meet the high expectations and rigorous demands of today's global competition, networked services must be rigorously tested under a range of conditions to assure performance," said Rich Ptak, industry analyst of Ptak, Noel & Associates. He added, "Accurate physical reproduction of global network conditions is prohibitively expensive in terms of resources and time for even the largest enterprise. Yet, testing must be done. With this need in mind, Shunra focused on building technology and a team of experts able to complement and augment any enterprise IT group, empowering them with the resources and knowledge to execute on their mission-critical IT projects."

Application testers and developers generally use test tools to record regression testing scripts as part of their User Acceptance Testing process. This provides them with the ability to run repeatable transactions from version to version secure in the knowledge that they can rely on precise execution timing as a gauge of performance. VE Desktop Professional has been integrated into this process to provide the network impact component of the application. This allows the company to bring the real world network into a measurable and standardized environment to validate what actual end users will experience when interfacing with the application. Adding the network layer to existing testing processes enables customers to accomplish more thorough testing in less time as well as significantly reduce the risk of application deployment failures.

Typical engagements conducted by the Shunra Professional Services group include evaluating end-users' experiences before rolling out an application into production. Just a few of the projects Shunra assists customers with include: assessing the feasibility of a data center relocation or server consolidation, implementing a VoIP platform, evaluating and implementing a WAN optimization solution, and troubleshooting deployed applications. With the new functional gains of VE Desktop Professional, the Shunra team is now able to fully manage customer projects, gather requirements, create test plans, write test scripts, and perform both functional and load testing.

"It is commonly understood by those in QA and Development that the network will impact the ultimate performance of their application," said Thomas Charlton, Shunra CEO. "The challenge, with most vendors having only appliance offerings, was how to enable network testing outside of the performance testing lab. Shunra has solved this issue by releasing an enterprise desktop software offering that can be integrated into current testing tools like QTP and LoadRunner without disrupting current testing processes or methodology. In short, we have removed any technical hurdle that would prevent the cost-effective best practice of including network testing throughout the application development lifecycle."
