Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center raises awareness about the importance of preventive and surgical eye care for individuals with diabetes.

A yearly eye exam is the key to catching diabetic retinopathy early. This is crucial because the earlier we pinpoint a problem, the better our chances to reduce or eliminate possible vision impairment

In honor of November being American Diabetes Month, Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center is raising awareness about the importance of preventive and surgical eye care for individuals with diabetes.

One of the major ocular diseases that affects diabetics is diabetic retinopathy. In this disease, excess amounts of sugar in the bloodstream eventually build up and damage the blood vessels within the eye. Once this happens, central vision may become blurred and if left untreated, blindness can occur.

Due to the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, diabetics are 25 times more likely to suffer from blindness than the general population. "It is because of these dramatically increased risks for vision impairment that routine preventive eye care should be a priority for those with diabetes," explains Dr. Mike Mann.

Dr. Mann recommends that diabetics receive a dilated eye exam at least once a year. "A yearly eye exam is the key to catching diabetic retinopathy early. This is crucial because the earlier we pinpoint a problem, the better our chances to reduce or eliminate possible vision impairment," stated Dr. Paul Mann.

Patients with diabetes can still have lasik utilizing all-laser IntraLase with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE Eye-Q laser. They must have a complete eye exam to make sure the diabetes is not affecting their vision prior to being a candidate for this life changing procedure. Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center was the first LASIK center in Texas to offer this extremely accurate technology.

The surgeons at Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center would like to stress the importance of prevention. This is why they would like to encourage diabetics to contact one of their full-service eye care facilities to schedule a routine eye exam. Daily measures such as monitoring blood sugar levels and eating right can also significantly contribute to reducing the probability of vision impairment problems.

Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center has seven vision correction centers located throughout the Houston and Austin areas. For more information on Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center and all-laser IntraLase with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE Eye-Q laser, please visit http://www.manneye.com.
