In the pursuit of excellence, William Osler Health Centre (WOHC) in Brampton, Ontario has installed an advanced automated drug management system, which will provide the hospital with the latest technology for patient safety.
William Osler Health Centre has installed the Swisslog PillPick® system. This advanced automated drug management system packages, stores and dispenses solids, injectables, cups and syringes in bar-coded, unit dose bags. The medications are dispersed using Swisslog's patented PickRing, a flexible ring with a patient-specific, 24-hour medication order. Finally, the Swisslog PillPick software manager ensures safe and efficient medication dispersal, allowing staff to verify medication bedside.
The PillPick system allows William Osler Health Centre to meet rising volume demands while reducing medication errors. The high-density PillPick robot can hold up to 53,000 unit doses, increasing productivity and giving pharmacists more time to spend consulting with physicians and nurses, ensuring greater patient safety.
"The Swisslog robot offers the required capacity to bar code almost all medications within the medication management system. Bar coded medication provides the platform for future WOHC initiatives which include bedside verification and documentation by the nurse. Bar coded medication is a widely recognized patient safety practice. It also enables bar code based restocking of the dispensing cabinet.
Installation of the PillPick® at the new Brampton Civic Hospital site was the foundational structure to building a closed-loop medication system as it packages and picks without human intervention. It also provides the safety feature of redundancy as it has two robotic arms. The system's two arms also promote efficiency in Pharmacy workflow through simultaneous functions, packaging and dispensing over 4000 doses per day.
After one month, the Medication Management Team is still adjusting workflow processes, but this new "team member" is proving to be an important driver in furthering efficiency and accuracy in medication safety at WOHC," states Carol Dueck, project manager pharmacy.
