Wi-Tronix®, LLC announced today that CN is deploying Wi-Tronix's suite of remote monitoring solutions on its fleet of Distributed Braking Cars (DBC). Wi-Tronix solutions will enable CN to utilize this highly developed suite of software to run longer trains in the winter months from Winnipeg to Edmonton. The DBC are placed at the end of trains to maintain airbrake pipe pressure at a certain operational level. The Wi-Tronix system provides CN with the benefits of GPS asset tracking, Fuel level, Refuel Alerts, Engine Monitoring, Main Reservoir Pressure Reporting, Battery Voltage, and Alarm Reporting along with improved fleet productivity.
CN continues to define different ways to utilize Wi-Tronix's Wi-PU and software technology. Wi-Tronix Wi-Tracker™ software will enable CN to maximize Distributed Braking Car asset utilization and productivity. Wi-Tracker provides a full suite of indispensable tools such as: statistics on utilization, engine shut down and duty cycle, fuel monitoring using geo-fencing, DBC fault and exception-based alerting, geo-mapping, and more. Additionally, CN managers will have access to the following information of their Distributed Braking Cars via the internet: GPS Tracking, Fuel levels, Refuel Alerts, Engine Monitoring (running state, overload, oil temperature, and coolant
temperature) Main Reservoir pressure, Battery Voltage Monitoring and the ability to receive emailed alerts. CN's Distributed Braking Car:
The DBC was developed to assist in the operation of long trains in cold weather conditions. The concept is based on the older-design air repeater car, which utilized an air compressor installed in a box car that was placed in the middle of the train. The DBC improves on the early-design air repeater car in many significant ways. The DBC uses a high-power TIBS radio module to communicate with the TRAINLINK-ES IDU in controlling the locomotive. As well, the DBC will assist in the application/release of the train brakes and perform all functions of and EOT/SBU in addition
to providing second source of air for trainline charging. The DBC is specifically designed to be used to the extreme tail-end of a train and will serve as the EOT/SBU including rear pressure status, HVM ON/OFF, last car emergency and motion sensing.
