Pioneer Theatre Company, Salt Lake City's only professional regional theatre, announces the launch of the theatre's New Plays Initiative. Elizabeth Williamson has been hired as PTC's first Literary Manager and Assistant to the Artistic Director.

We're interested in work from playwrights at all stages in their careers, from those who are just beginning to make their way in the field to those who are already established

Charles Morey, Artistic Director for Pioneer Theatre Company has announced the first step in the Equity theatre's institutional commitment towards new play development. Elizabeth Williamson has been hired as PTC's first Literary Manager and Assistant to the Artistic Director to oversee the New Plays Initiative, a program that has long been one of the stated goals for Pioneer Theatre Company.

"The future of theatre as an art form depends on new work," says Morey. "It's exciting to think that Pioneer Theatre Company could be the incubator for the next great play, or the emergence of fresh new voices in the American theatre."

Williamson started at PTC on October 1. She is a dramaturg, director, and 2007 NEA Fellow in Literary Translation who has worked both in Europe and the U.S. at Steppenwolf, Magic Theatre, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Court Theatre, Lincoln Center Theater's Directors Lab, La Jolla Playhouse, ACT, Wien Moderne Festival, and Williamstown Theatre Festival. She holds a Bachelor's in Theatre & Comparative Literature from Bennington College, a Master's in European Literature from Oxford University, and trained at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

"We're interested in work from playwrights at all stages in their careers, from those who are just beginning to make their way in the field to those who are already established," says Williamson.

Williamson will be working with Morey to identify playwrights to whom PTC will offer commissions to write new plays, as well as reading scripts of new plays submitted by literary agents and others. She will also be overseeing staged readings of new plays, if that will serve to help the playwright.

The theatre plans to commission and develop new plays, but PTC's ultimate goal is the full production of world premiere plays.

Founded in 1962, Pioneer Theatre Company is Utah's premiere resident professional theatre and performs at Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre, located on the University of Utah campus, at 300 South and 1400 East in Salt Lake City.
