New Report Profiles Crowded Community PACS Software Market

Avreo interWORKS interVIEW receives the highest performance score among a growing list of solutions from both large enterprise firms and small low-cost vendors

Lacking the resources of larger providers, many community hospitals today face the challenging task of implementing picture archiving and communication system (PACS) technology amid a myriad of vendor choices and increasingly tighter software budgets.

A new report published by research firm KLAS profiles the community PACS market segment, revealing a crowded competitive space that features both large imaging and enterprise IT vendors that are moving downstream from the large hospital market as well as smaller vendors that started with small hospital and outpatient facilities and have now expanded their PACS market share. The convergence of these two groups leaves providers with a difficult choice: Pursue smaller vendors that generally deliver commonly used functionality at a lower price or look to larger firms for greater functionality and technical resources but which require a larger investment.

"PACS implementations at large independent hospitals and IDNs have reached a saturation point, leaving little opportunity for significant vendor deployments in that market segment," said report author and KLAS research director Ben Brown. "Large and small vendors are now looking to smaller community hospitals to grow their PACS market share. Based on that shift, it is no surprise that over the last two years, 64 percent of new community hospital purchases have occurred in hospitals with under 100 beds."

In evaluating 17 community PACS vendors, the KLAS report found that the Avreo interWORKS interVIEW product received the highest performance score (93.7 out of 100) based on feedback from current customers. Other top products included Sectra PACS (90.6), Infinitt PACS (88.7) and GE Centricity IW (87.8). It should be noted, however, that virtually all the vendors in this study received a higher performance score than the KLAS healthcare software average of 79.7 out of 100, following the trend of historically high performance for most vendors in the PACS market segment.
