The Lord Has Helped Us: Celebrating 100 Years of Pentecost in Kitchener 1909-2009

For a church -- and for a church's congregation -- the present and the future are inextricably linked to the past. The past, all that has gone before in a church's history, represents the bedrock that has allowed the present to flourish. It is the foundation upon which to build the hopes and dreams of the future. It is the past, it is history, that creates the building blocks for the future to unfold.

there exists a special church, the Kitchener Gospel Temple. It is one of the oldest, most revered Pentecostal churches in Ontario and this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of its birth. For the church and its congregation, the year 2009 will be one of reflection, pride and celebration.

How appropriate, then, for the church's pastor, Dr. Richard Burton, to dig into the Kitchener Gospel Temple archives and create the hard-cover publication entitled The Lord Has Helped Us.

Dr. Burton has gone straight back to the church's beginnings in this newly published work, referencing material from church and congregation archives, and culling material from past published works that honoured the church's earlier significant anniversaries.

The result is an historical spiritual treasure -- and also a keepsake for members of the Kitchener Gospel Temple congregation. This 100 year perspective on a church and its humble origins is a lovingly produced work and comes complete with photographic illustration from the early 1900s right up to the present day. In fact, much of the entire second half of The Lord Has Helped Us represents a photographic showcase of Kitchener Gospel Temple's history.

The modern history of the church actually began in November 1968 when the congregation moved to a striking new facility at the intersection of River Road and Conway Drive in Kitchener. The church had outgrown its previous location on Benton Street in downtown Kitchener and the church's pastor at the time, Rev. Ed Austin, persuaded church leaders to find a new home, to build for the future. The past 41 years have seen the Kitchener Gospel Temple make significant advances. Throughout seasons of both strength and struggle Rev. Austin's vision has been realized.

Dr. Burton has captured the spirit of the Kitchener Gospel Temple in both words and pictures. The Lord Has Helped Us is a testament to the church's historic past, its successful present, and its hopes and dreams for the future.
