UK Motorists Downsizing to Save Cash

UK motorists are opting for smaller cars in a bid to save cash on fuel and insurance, according to Swinton, the UK's leading high street insurance retailer.

As the credit crunch continues to bite, Swinton has recorded a 25% increase in the number of car insurance quotes for smaller-engined vehicles in the last six months, compared to a 20% drop in the number of new car insurance quotes it processed for vehicles with engines over 1.8 litres.

In an online poll of 2,000 customers, 81% said the credit crunch will affect their next choice of vehicle.

All vehicles in the UK are assigned an insurance group rating number between 1 and 20. Choosing a car with a lower number can assist motorists in obtaining cheaper car insurance.

Steve Chelton, Insurer development manager at Swinton said: "Looking at these figures it is clear that Brits are choosing to cut their outgoings and drive smaller engined vehicles which are cheaper to insure, tax and refuel.

"Cars with small engines and no modifications, which also have cheap and easily accessible spare parts, are an ideal choice if you want to keep insurance premiums to a minimum."
