From initial diagnosis, through treatment and beyond, fighting cancer is a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. In this frank and moving book, food and wine-loving photographer Keith Hern describes his experience of throat cancer.

Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, hospitals, drugs and their effects are all here, but so too is the mental fight - how to stay positive and keep fighting whatever happens. With the help of NLP coach Helen Oakwater, Keith challenges the cancer head-on and emerges triumphant into a new, more colourful world. A powerfully uplifting read.

What's it really like to hear the words "you have throat cancer"? In Bangers and Mash, Keith Hern tells us with honesty and humour exactly what it's like. From the grim reality of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments to unexpected moments of real warmth and kindness from friends old and new, the fight to survive is vividly described.

Throughout Keith's experience he kept notes, both a diary and photos and it is the latter that bring a new dimension to his account of battling throat cancer. The book includes moving details of how he, and other cancer survivors take on an amazing charity trek across Iceland in aid of the Royal Marsden hospital where they were treated. Keith shows off his considerable photographic skills with a stunning photo-diary of the trip.

Helen says "NLP offers a client ways to keep in mind their desired outcome and also release any barriers or historical shackles.

For Keith his oft repeated phrase" focus on the destination" , gave him a different perspective, focused on his desired future. Seeing the whole treatment as a journey, which would have some unexpected detours, however he knew he'd complete the journey and become healthy. This was much more useful than focusing on the symptoms or hallucinating on potential failure. Top class sports professionals like Tiger Woods use mental rehearsal techniques to see all their future successes. With NLP, similar techniques are simply applied to other areas of life.

NLP also has unique tools to easily release past traumas, dis-ease and limiting beliefs. This enables people to create more empowering beliefs about themselves, their health and their world. By disconnecting a traumatic memory from the physical emotion created at that time, people can remember difficult events without reliving them. This creates the space for deep healing to occur."

And what does the future hold? Keith is planning the ultimate celebration when he gets to five years cancer clear - rent the house out for a year and 'go' - spend a year going overland from the top of Canada to the bottom of Chile and round into Argentina.

Keith says "How lucky am I to have a second chance at life, and I don't intend to waste it!"

The book was released on 2nd November and is available from all good bookstores including Amazon UK and Amazon USA.
