We have invested significant efforts and resources to develop this technology and do not believe that other ‘copycat’ services should be allowed to use our technology without a license.
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 21, 2010
Stanacard LLC, the New York-based leader in low-cost international calling, has announced a victory in its court case (1:2008cv04859, New York Southern District Court) against Rebtel, a Swedish company funded by Index Venture Partners and Balderton Capital (former Benchmark Capital). Stanacard alleges that Rebtel infringes Stanacard’s US patent 7,346,156 which covers among other things Stanacard’s popular SmartDial™ calling technology. A Manhattan judge rejected Rebtel’s motion for summary judgment which claimed that the patent was invalid. The court also rejected Rebtel’s proposed claim construction definitions.
As the global leader in this space, Stanacard has connected millions of calls worldwide with unparalleled convenience, as it allows users to dial a local number directly from their phones, which will seamlessly connect to the caller's international destination number – with no need for access codes or PIN numbers. Thanks to this convenience, plus its low calling rates, Stanacard became the largest provider in the market.
“We are happy at this vindication of our position by the court in New York,” said Anastasia Koroleva, CEO of Stanacard. “We have invested significant efforts and resources to develop this technology and do not believe that other ‘copycat’ services should be allowed to use our technology without a license.”
Stanacard will continue to pursue legal actions against Jajah (case 5:2009cv00580, California Northern District Court), a Sequoia Capital-backed company, recently acquired by the Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica, and other services, which Stanacard believes also infringe upon this patent.
A NYC-based telecom company, Stanacard has become the service of choice for millions of people living outside their native countries, or having friends abroad. Stanacard’s most popular feature, SmartDial launched commercially in 2004, allows a user to dial a local number to get immediately connected to a friend in another country or state. The local number is assigned to the friend for free and the use is unlimited. The feature has proved to be especially popular for calls from mobiles since Stanacard can be used from any mobile phone with or without an international plan or WiFi connection. The cost of such calls is negligible compared to the rates of cellphone companies, most calling cards or Skype.
Stanacard’s SmartDial technology has been identified as the best solution for traditional international calling companies trying to go online. Stanacard has already licensed the technology to a number of companies including LocalPhone, QuickDial and Innodial and had court injunctions issued against Jaxtr, Lets 101 and Global Telelinks.
