Dusseldorf, Germany, (PRWEB) March 8, 2010
The XCell-Center has released impressive results from a follow-up study of 100 cerebral palsy patients treated with autologous bone marrow stem cells. Overall, 67% improved following treatment.
This improvement rate is consistent with the rate released in September 2009 for 45 cerebral palsy patients and provides further support to the premise that patients with cerebral palsy can be treated safely and effectively with autologous stem cell therapy.
The most common improvement, reported over 70% of the time, was a decrease in arm and hand spasticity. 60% of patients experienced improvements in hand and finger motor skills, coordination, and general use.
“Griffin underwent his first stem cell treatment at the XCell-Center in April 2009. Cognitive improvements materialized after about 3 weeks and physical improvements started at 3 - 6 months. Griffin's muscle tone improved along with his attention span and ability to engage others. He no longer required Botox which he needed twice before stem cell therapy,” said Carol Wayland, the mother of Griffin Perez, a patient who continues to improve after his second stem cell treatment in September, 2009.

Leg and foot coordination improved in nearly half of the patients. Approximately 50% had reduced lower limb spasticity. Over 40% were able to walk better.
Speech improved in almost 60% of patients. 1 in 5 showed improved cognition.
“Since they include many more patients with greater levels of individual improvement, these new results are even more encouraging to us than those released for 45 cerebral palsy patients in 2009. We are now looking forward to seeing results for our newly developed neuro-endoscopic autologous stem cell implantation technique (NEASCI™) which we expect to deliver even more impressive results than these,” stated Dr. Ute Tamaschke, the XCell-Center’s pediatric neurosurgeon. NEASCI results are anticipated to be released in 2011.

Each treatment begins by collecting a small amount bone marrow from the patient’s hip via thin needle mini-puncture. The stem cells are separated from the bone marrow at the XCell-Center’s EU certified cGMP laboratory, where they are counted and their vitality is confirmed. The last step consists of inserting a fine spinal needle between the patient’s L4 and L5 vertebrae and injecting the stem cells into the cerebrospinal fluid which flows into the brain. The cost for this cerebral palsy treatment is 9,000 Euros.
NEASCI™ treatments start at 17,800 Euros.
