Gilbert, Ariz. (PRWEB) May 21, 2010
Sports & Orthopaedic Specialists’ J. Todd Davis, M.D., recently was appointed by the Arizona Sports Concussion Network as its official Southeast Valley post-concussion representative. The prestigious appointment adds to Dr. Davis’ sports medicine and concussion qualifications, augmenting the offerings of Sports & Orthopaedic Specialists, the only practice devoted exclusively to sports medicine in the Southeast Valley.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the annual incidence of sports–related concussion is estimated at 300,000. Although the majority of athletes who experience a concussion are likely to recover, some may experience chronic cognitive and neurobehavioral difficulties related to recurrent injury often caused by premature return to play. Davis’ specialty in concussions allows him to diagnose his patients’ level of severity and treat them accordingly.
“From professional to recreational athletes, there is an increasing need for concussion testing and treatment,” says Davis. “Athletes that are not fully recovered from an initial concussion are much more vulnerable for recurrent, cumulative and even catastrophic consequences of a second concussive injury. Such difficulties are prevented if the athlete is being monitored by a concussion expert and has adequate time to recover to allow for a safe return to play.”
In addition to this recent appointment, Davis has several years experience with ImPACT (a computerized neurocognitive test for both pre-injury and post-injury evaluation) and is a former credentialed ImPACT consultant. Davis also is a speaker on the topic of concussions for the Arizona Academy of Pediatrics and the Brain Injury Association of Arizona. As well as being a sports medicine specialist, Davis is a sports medicine consultant for Major League Baseball Umpires; a physician representative to the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee; and a team physician for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona State University and multiple high schools throughout the Southeast Valley.
Sports & Orthopaedic Specialists, led by Orthopaedic Surgeon Craig Weinstein, M.D., MPH, provides care for sports related and non-sports related injuries, including fractures, workplace injuries and recreational injuries. The facility features an array of the latest technology, from a digital x-ray machine, electronic medical records and an innovative office lay-out, which helps achieve excellence in patient care and privacy.
“I am pleased to have Dr. Davis as a vital member of the Sports & Orthopaedic Specialists staff,” says Dr. Weinstein. “His Arizona Sports Concussion Network appointment adds to the sophisticated treatment we offer our patients and helps support the increasing demand for healthcare in the Southeast Valley.”
