SafeList Launches First Online Marketplace Based on Verified Identity

Most innovative, user-friendly classifieds, coupons, dating platform debuts for San Diego area; national launch to occur later this year.

“Our proprietary authentication process sets us apart from all our competitors. Members of our community have the unique advantage of transacting only with fellow members who, like themselves, have also been authenticated," said Karim Pirani of SafeList.

SafeList Ventures, Inc., a San Diego-based technology start-up, announced today the launch of the world’s first and only online classifieds platform based on its Verified Identity technology.

Unlike other web marketplaces where buyers and sellers remain anonymous, requires its users to confirm who they are before gaining access to the site’s core features.

“Our proprietary authentication process sets us apart from all our competitors,” said Karim Pirani, founder and chairman of SafeList who embarked on a vision two years ago to build the world’s first non-anonymous classifieds marketplace that is safer, hyper-local and packed with user-friendly features. “Members of our community have the unique advantage of transacting only with fellow members who, like themselves, have also been authenticated, but still able to keep their identity private and create unique screen names.”

To become a verified user, individuals must submit themselves to a series of questions based on their personal life history that our proprietary system culls from a comprehensive Lexus-Nexus search. They must correctly answer these questions within 240 seconds. Failure to respond correctly will keep the person at the basic user level.

“Unlike commerce facilitated by websites like eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) and Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), where the chance of a physical meeting between the buyer and the seller is almost zero, transactions facilitated by a classifieds marketplace makes it almost mandatory for the two parties to meet face-to-face,” said Pirani. “Hence the need for basic due diligence is more critical, not less. recognized this and offers a fun, intuitive and safer solution today.”

Among the website’s many cutting-edge features is a fully integrated video chat function to help its members communicate with each other in a more protected and efficient manner for a myriad of activities, ranging from business transactions to social meetings. Numerous benefits abound by doing so, including for:

  •     Employers who will save time and money by conducting preliminary job interviews and criminal background checks with prospective employees.
  •     Parents who will be able to “meet” potential babysitters or tutors before inviting them to their homes for a more formal and thorough, face to face meeting.
  •     Singles who will find this feature both fun and helpful in finding a date.
  •     Members at large for interviewing service providers like plumbers and electricians before hiring them for a repair job.

Many industry luminaries, including marketing expert and best selling author Seth Godin and Microsoft Corp.’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Chief of Research and Strategy, Craig Mundie, have called for online identity verification. Earlier this year, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mundie put a harsh spotlight on the dangers lurking on the Internet, and proposed a three-tiered system of online identification. He also claimed during the conference that individuals are used to having to present identification in other areas of life, and the Internet should not be any different.

"People don't understand the scale of criminal activity on the Internet. Whether criminal, individual or nation states, the community is growing more sophisticated," said Mundie.

For a limited time, is offering a free, one-year verified membership to the first 10,000 users who sign up. The company will also be giving away one Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad every two weeks to a SafeList verified member selected via bi-weekly, random drawings.
