As Labor Day approaches, so does the perennial question, "What was the Song of the Summer?" It's an honor many pop stars hope to achieve. Billboard.com has been keeping track of airplay and sales from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and will declare the official "2010 Song of the Summer" in early September. The Predicto Mobile community has been weighing in via text messages with their choices for the season's anthem, as well as other music-related polls about today's hottest artists.
Singles from Katy Perry and Usher have dominated the charts this season. So it's no wonder that Predicto voters are nearly evenly split when asked if Perry's "California Gurls" or Usher's "OMG" will be crowned with the honor by Billboard. At Predicto.com, the ab-tastic R&B crooner currently has a slight edge over the quirky pop princess.
Usher is also benefiting from his association with pop music's favorite teenager, Justin Bieber. The famously-coiffed idol recently inked a deal to star in a 3D movie, and the Predicto Mobile community expects Usher to appear alongside his protégé, with one member summing up the reason succinctly: "They are buddies (so) I wouldn't doubt it. Wherever Justin is, there is Usher."
Katy Perry's new album "Teenage Dreams" will be released on August 24th, and fans and critics alike wonder if her confectionary pop hits will be popular enough to outsell this summer's most successful artists. Her stiffest competition right now is Eminem's "Recovery." The biggest seller of 2010, it moved more than 745,000 units in its debut week. While that pace could be beaten before the year comes to close, the majority voting in Predicto's poll think Ms. Perry will not be the one to knock off Slim Shady. The anti-Perry camp believes that the two do not even deserve comparison, with one voter opining that Perry is "a mediocre artist… she's not that talented and not as popular. 'Teenage Dream' will be no exception."
Katy Perry shouldn't feel too bad, though. "California Gurls" is in fact on track to be named Song of the Summer by Billboard. Having already earned the distinction once, with her 1998 hit "I Kissed a Girl," a victory this year would be Perry's second time winning the crown. That's one honor neither Usher nor Eminem have ever achieved.
