Daylight Savings Time comes to an end this Sunday, November 7th at 2am. Fire and Public Safety Officials across the country are urging Americans to make it a bi-annual practice to also change their fire alarm batteries whenever they turn the clocks back in Fall and then again when they turn the clocks ahead in the Spring.

Time To Change Your Battery!

“Change Your Clock, Change Your Fire Alarm Battery!”

Smoke detectors save lives! This weekend, when you change your clock – Local Fire Departments are urging you to also change the battery in your smoke detectors.

In the event of smoke and fire, a properly installed and maintained smoke detector can save your life. Smoke detectors are essential, and provide an early warning of danger should a fire break out. When a smoke detector activates, that is your signal to follow the family’s fire escape plan and get your family to safety.

Donald Colarusso, a Firefighter for over 20 years and Founder of All Hands Fire Equipment notes that, “Smoke detectors should be tested monthly. Place smoke detectors in accordance with manufacturer and local fire department recommendations. You should also follow manufacturer recommended maintenance requirements, including annual battery replacement. It’s also a good time of year to inspect your Fire Extinguishers.”

The NFPA says that: Sixty-five percent of reported home fire deaths in 2000-2004 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that didn’t work. No smoke alarms were present in 43% of the home fire deaths. In 22% of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not activate. The death rate per 100 reported fires is twice as high in homes without working smoke alarms as homes with working smoke alarms. An estimated 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke alarms. (Source
