For the first time since the program began last year, various institutions are among the bi-annual “Restore Integrity Award” (RIA) winners.
Bestowing the RIA is POPULAR, Inc. (POPULAR), a national grassroots good government and legal reform advocate. Administering the awards program for POPULAR is its Advisory Board President, George Stokes, Sr. of Texas, and Katherine Moore, a POPULAR Advisory Board member from Florida.
“Joining individual award recipients, attorney Lindsey M. Williams and Juan Manuel Albarado, are countless people working with and through our institutional winners who deserve the RIA” says George Stokes, Sr.
According to Advisory Board member Katherine Moore, “all of POPULAR’s award recipients have taken or otherwise pursued one or more specific acts or measures to eliminate significant inequity, waste, fraud, abuse, or other public and/or private sector corruption in America.” She adds, “POPULAR defines corruption as any illegal or unethical conduct contributing to the systemic malfunction of government, commerce, and/or democracy in America as contemplated by the U.S. Constitution.”
“POPULAR’s RIA is awarded bi-annually in the categories of public sector, private sector, and / or grassroots advocacy” explains Advisory Board President George Stokes, Sr.
POPULAR’s year-end RIA recipients for 2010 are as follows:
Private Sector Category:
Attorney Lindsey M. Williams, Advocacy Director for the National Whistleblowers Center, for demonstrating her commitment through POPULAR to helping poor and other disadvantaged people access affordable and competent legal representation, important civil and criminal justice system reforms, as well as appropriate judicial oversight.
The Government Accountability Project (GAP), Participant Media (producer of such popular films as Charlie Wilson's War, An Inconvenient Truth, Syriana, and Good Night and Good Luck), and the Paley Center for the Media for showcasing some of America’s most effective anti-corruption advocates by co-producing “Anyone Can Whistle: The Essential Role of the Whistleblower in American Society.”
Emory University School of Law, host of the first “National Civil Rights Access to Justice Forum,” for assembling some of the most important figures responsible for passage of America’s civil rights laws of the 1960s to consider whether such historic strides are eroding under the weight of recent Supreme Court decisions.
Grassroots Advocacy Category:
Juan Manuel Albarado, a Texas state prison inmate, for “A Youthful Waste,” only one example of his insightful poetry and prose depicting the arguably undue challenges of juveniles criminally prosecuted as adults and incarcerated among adult male offenders.
POPULAR will mail all of its year-end RIA recipients an encased certificate, commemorating their award. They were personally notified of and congratulated for receiving the award prior to this public announcement. POPULAR will announce its next round of award recipients in June 2011.
