Colleges and universities often use credit earned by examination for advanced placement purposes, to waive entrance requirements or as transfer credit applied to their own degree programs.

Access to college credit by examination is increasing dramatically with the addition of 817 new testing sites for Excelsior College® Examinations in the U.S. and around the globe.
Excelsior College Examinations is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected credit-by-exam programs developed and maintained by an accredited, degree-granting institution. With the five-fold increase in the number of available testing sites, these exams are an even more convenient way to earn credit for knowledge gained on the job, through independent study or by other means.
Excelsior College, a private, nonprofit institution, is widely recognized as a leader in the evaluation of prior learning, and offers a series of more than 40 undergraduate examination titles at both the upper- and lower-levels.
Excelsior College Examinations are currently administered across the United States at 230 Pearson Professional Centers and via the military’s DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support) program. Through arrangements with Pearson VUE, the exams are now also available in academic settings such as schools, colleges and nonprofit training centers, bringing the total number of testing sites to more than 1,000 worldwide. Pearson VUE academic testing centers provide proctored environments for a variety of certification and professional licensing examinations. Organizations such as national medical boards, state licensing boards and major IT certification programs partner with Pearson VUE to provide safe, convenient and secure testing sites for their examinations.
The American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) has evaluated and made college credit recommendations for Excelsior College Examinations.
“Excelsior College and Pearson VUE have had a strong, professional relationship for several years and expanding the distribution of Excelsior College Examinations to other parts of Pearson’s network is a logical extension of our association,” said Dr. Patrick Jones, dean of assessment at Excelsior College. “The addition of these new sites offers students more testing appointment options and access to centers that may be located closer to where they live. Overall, this will make our computer-based examinations more accessible to individuals who want or need to validate their competence in a variety of academic subjects.”
Credit-by-examination is a highly efficient means of demonstrating subject matter expertise, and this approach can save students hundreds, even thousands, of dollars as they pursue a college degree. For a fraction of the cost of a semester-long course taken on a campus, in just a few hours students can earn a full semester’s worth of credit by proving competence in subjects they have already mastered. Colleges and universities often use credit earned by examination for advanced placement purposes, to waive entrance requirements or as transfer credit applied to their own degree programs.
Last year Pearson and Excelsior together launched UExcel®, a new series of computer-based, college-level examinations covering typical lower-level undergraduate course work.
