Oregon State Extended Campus has partnered with the College of Health and Human Sciences to launch an online bachelor of science degree in Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS). Oregon State's popular HDFS program is now available to a more diverse group of students, regardless of location, family obligations, or career responsibilities.

Professionals with an Oregon State degree in human development and family sciences work in a variety of helping professions.

“An HDFS major delivered via Ecampus increases the capacity for people and their families to get the support and services they need right where they live,” says Alexis Walker, HDFS department chair.

‘Helping’ professionals are getting some assistance of their own from Oregon State University Extended Campus (Ecampus) and the College of Health and Human Sciences. These entities have partnered to launch a new degree online in Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS). The College is renowned for educating ‘helping’ professionals who serve the masses in careers like youth counseling, social work, crisis intervention, and marriage and family counseling.

Oregon State already awards more bachelor’s degrees in HDFS than other Oregon universities with similar programs. The option of this online Ecampus degree, which was designed with non-traditional and off-campus students in mind, expands the availability of this popular OSU program. Now it’s more accessible to a larger audience, especially working professionals and parents, or students who are place-bound.

“Our advising staff has had repeated queries from students about whether the HDFS major is available online,” says Alexis Walker, HDFS department chair. “It really pleases me that they can now answer “yes” to that question.”

Students will pursue an interdisciplinary approach to families and human development across the life course within the contexts of school, work, and communities. They will become prepared for careers in the helping professions or will be in the position to pursue advanced academic degrees in a variety of fields.

“There is no question that people who provide direct-line service to individuals and family members are needed in every nook and cranny of Oregon and beyond. Yet the opportunity for higher education of individuals in far-flung communities has been limited,” says Walker. “An HDFS major delivered via Ecampus increases the capacity for people and their families to get the support and services they need right where they live.”

The B.S. in HDFS online degree offers tremendous flexibility. It is especially suited to people who may possess an associate’s degree or currently serve in a ‘helping’ profession but need a higher degree to advance their careers. In completing the B.S. in HDFS online, students will enrich their preparation for exciting, interdisciplinary careers, which can include serving as a crisis intervention worker, community activity director, adoption agency counselor, or volunteer manager.
