On January 12, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Montage Hotel in Los Angeles, Ludus Athletics and the U.S. Association for UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, will host a star-studded event to inform area philanthropists about ongoing and urgent relief efforts in Pakistan. Flooding there has impacted an area the size of California, destroying the homes, farms and businesses of millions of people and complicating the work of the international community.

UFC Champ Anderson “The Spider” Silva will donate a pair of his signed gloves as part of the silent auction. United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR Ambassador Angelina Jolie will also deliver a video-taped message about the plight of Afghan refugees.

Anderson Silva, a Brazilian mixed martial artist and current Ultimate Fighting Championship® Middleweight Champion, comes from an impoverished background and is eager to help address the concerns of other impoverished communities around the world. “Even though the Afghan refugees' background is different from mine, I can relate to their plight,” said Silva. “I support the work of the UN Refugee Agency in Pakistan and its work helping needy communities worldwide.”

The charity event will feature the new eco-friendly, socially conscious Ludus Athletics line of active wear,
which uses organic fabrics and recycled goods. The pieces of the the inaugural line being revealed in the fashion show held at the January 12 event at the Montage Hotel will be sold and proceeds will be donated to the UN Refugee Agency.

Afghan-American Hamed Wardak, CEO of Ludus Athletics said, “So many members of the Afghan Diaspora are refugees in one way or another. I am pleased that I can give back, particularly through Ludus Athletics.”

Evening hosts include Pam Omidyar, the wife of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, Khaled Hosseini, author of “The Kite Runner,” the host of the Afghan TV Program “Mozhdah,” Mozhdah Jamalzadah, Chairman and Founder, Afghanistan World Foundation Sonia Nassery Cole, actress Azita Ghanizada, the star of the upcoming SYFY network’s action-adventure series ALPHAS as well as Hamed Wardak.
