Couponing has gained popularity over the past three years of the recession and shows no sign of slowing down because smart consumers are learning how to save with coupons and spreading the word, said Nelson. is a free service that teaches shoppers how to get extreme savings at the grocery store every week. With 3.1 million members, the site provides the most extensive information on grocery deals for all 50 states.

“I just saved $211 this week by using and combining the store deals with coupons of things I need," said one of the site's new members, "I cringe that I was paying full price for years.”

In 2010 marketers once again distributed more consumer packaged goods (CPG) coupons than the prior year, reaching 332 billion -- the largest single-year distribution quantity ever recorded in the U.S., exceeding last year's prior record by 21 billion coupons according to the NCH Resource Center.

Overall redemption volume in the U.S. grew 3.1% to 3.3 billion CPG coupons and 78.3% of consumers reported using coupons regularly, up 14.7 share points from pre-recession levels. Consumer demand for coupons remained high in 2010 as frugal shopping habits created during the recession were sustained throughout the sluggish economic recovery that occurred during the year.
