Following the conclusion of another record-breaking year in 2010, Greg Coiro, CEO of Direct Line Cruises, Inc. was thinking that things couldn’t possibly go much better for his company. Then, came the conference call at 1:00 pm on January 12th.
Mother Nature had just dumped 12 to 15 inches of snow on the Northeastern portion of the U.S. and the few Direct Line Cruises staff members who were able to make into the office that day were struggling to keep up with the incoming call activity. Damn the snow! Damn the economy! People still wanted to book cruises.
The conference call with Royal Caribbean’s Business Development Manager, Louise Habrack, and Northeast Regional Sales Director, Cyndi Cobb, was supposed to focus on the marketing of European cruises in 2011, or at least that’s what Greg was told when the call was originally scheduled. But, then to his very pleasant surprise, they were joined on the call by Vicki Freed, Royal Caribbean International’s Senior Vice President of Sales, as well as their Vice President of Sales and National Accounts, Joanne Schimelman. "At that point," said Greg, "I knew something was up."
Tom and Helen Coiro, co-founders of Direct Line Cruises, were also asked to participate in the call. Tom acknowledged that, "Although Vicki has called us from time to time just to keep in touch, having them all on the line at once made me wonder if this call was really going to be about our new promotion of Royal Caribbean’s European cruises." But, he didn’t have to wonder long when Ms. Freed disclosed that the real purpose of the call was to announce that Direct Line Cruises had been named Royal Caribbean International’s "Northeast Partner of the Year for 2010".
"What an incredible honor," Helen exclaimed. "With nearly 4,000 established travel agencies selling Royal Caribbean cruises in the Northeast, this award is really something special." Still beaming, she added, "For more than ten years, Royal Caribbean has been the number one cruise brand that we sell, and receiving this recognition from them just makes us feel even more enthusiasm for their fabulous ships and their supportive Sales management team."
Following the conference call, Helen popped open a bottle of champagne that had been given to her as a gift over the Holidays and she poured a celebratory sip for each of Direct Line Cruises’ staff members. "Our agency won this award because of the hard work and commitment of our entire staff." "So," Helen told them, "each of you really deserves the credit and the congratulations," and indeed they do.
