1-800-GET-THIN & The Lap-Band: When People Lose Weight, Family Members Follow Their Example

A new study shows that when a family member loses weight, other family members are motivated to lose weight too, according to the publication "The Archives of Surgery".

Obese people who take positive steps to lose weight can have an inspiring effect on obese family members.

A study published in the October 2011 issue of the Archives of Surgery shows that when a family member has bariatric surgery to lose weight, other family members who are obese may be more likely to lose weight themselves. The obese family members dropped their weight by an average of eight pounds during the study. The senior study author is Dr. John Morton, an associate professor of surgery at Stanford University and director of bariatric surgery at Stanford Hospital & Clinics.

Can obesity be contagious?
Previous studies found that obesity may be “contagious”, with people much more likely to become obese if their spouse, family member or friend is overweight, according to Los Angeles bariatric surgeon Dr. Lee Au. Dr. Au says he agrees with the study’s findings, which he says mirror his own observations of Lap-Band patients and their families. “There is no doubt that obese family members who are taking positive steps to lose weight can have an inspiring effect on those around them,” he says. “When people see a family member succeeding, they realize that they too can take action to shed pounds and become healthier! Watching someone lose weight may be the best motivator of all!”
