A new Phase I SBIR award from the Army provides a boost to Surmet’s cost effective manufacturing of ALON® and spinel Optical Ceramics. The outcome of this program entitled, "Quantitative Analysis of ALON® and Spinel Dome Blanks", will result in a fast and cost effective method for optically characterizing dome blanks without having to fabricate them to their final exacting dimensions.

The processes developed during the new Army SBIR will lead to more affordable hemispherical and hyper-hemispherical domes without sacrificing precision and performance.

Multimode Seekers are receiving significant attention as a way to provide more capability in the same package. The optical requirements alone place a heavy burden on the design and production of the dome as the associated tolerances are very tight, making these domes very challenging and expensive to produce. The processes developed during the new Army SBIR will lead to more affordable Multimode Seeker Domes without sacrificing precision and performance.

Surmet is an advanced materials solution company, and for nearly thirty years, has been quietly building enabling materials and fabrication capabilities for its customers focusing on building the next generation advanced systems.

Surmet produces a wide variety of optical components ranging in complexity from Transparent Armor, through prisms, lenses; sensor, laser and reconnaissance windows, as well as hemispherical and hyper-hemispherical domes. Our Optical Ceramic components have been inserted in a number of defense systems, and are being evaluated towards future defense systems including Joint Air to Ground Missile (JAGM) and Common InfraRed Counter Measures (CIRCM). Surmet’s expertise includes the ability to produce blanks including ones with internal architectures such as a conducting mesh, as well as the ability to fabricate these blanks into finished optical components.
Founded in 1982, Surmet Corporation is an Advanced Materials Technology Company, with a vertically integrated manufacturing capability. In addition to multiple facilities in Massachusetts, including its Headquarters, Surmet also has R&D and manufacturing facilities in Buffalo, NY and Murrieta, CA.

Surmet thanks the US Department of Defense and Department of Energy for their support through R&D and technology transition funding.

Surmet wishes its customers, clients and partners a very happy new year.
